Both of these explanations lack historical backing, as both the "jaw" and the "juice" variants appeared only in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It has also been suggested that the name derives from the French "Jeu-trompe" meaning "toy-trumpet".

As far as I'm aware, the name jew's harp has been around for a long time and the etymology is obscure. There has never been any anti semitic or otherwise perjorative connotation that I know of, but the instrument is occasionally referred to as jaw harp. Whether this is for pc reasons I don't know, as jaw harp seems to have been around a lot longer than political correctness.
